THE BODY IS OURS

There are ways we learn to carry ourselves before we ever realize we are learning them. How much space to take up. How loudly to speak. Where to put our hands. How to make a room comfortable with our presence. The Body is Ours is a short film about what happens when a Black man begins to let that learning go. Through movement, breath and the gradual release of a body that has spent years being held together, the film explores the distance between being seen and actually being present. Between composure and freedom. Between moving through the world and feeling, finally, at home inside yourself. There is no transformation into someone new. No performance of strength. No arrival at some better version of the man we met. Only a body remembering that it was his before it belonged to anyone else’s gaze.
